My Earpod remote does not work

I have a iPhone 5s and my Apple earpods do not work 😟 I bought them from a best buy and they were Apple brand I put them in a front pouch of my backpack and i was sondering if it was the earpods or did rain/water get in the romote?? PLEASE HELP
