How can you use a used disk without formating it?

Hi I've been use a firewire cable for time machine, but now I have an airport extreme and I am looking for a way to use my backup disk with my airport over wifi. The guides say you have to format the disk and I'me looking for a way to do it without formating my disk. Thanks in advance!
