I purchased an HP printer that is not compatible with Snow Leopard. I want to download EL Capitan, but all my word

HP Printer is not compatible with Snow Leopard. Want to download ElCapitan, but will lose Word & Excel Files.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

El Capitan HP Printer compatibility is not assured. The last HP driver update was made for Yosemite, not El Capitan. Only Brother and certain Canon printers have had their drivers updated for El Capitan*:

You can install Office 2011 for Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or use one of the other office alternatives on this tip:

It is true that 10.7 and 10.8 are the only updates currently available from the App Store to 10.6.8 other than 10.11. So you might have to find someone else who has a copy of 10.10 or earlier to be able to use your HP on a newer system. Are there other reasons you want the newer system? If not, you may want to return the HP and get a printer known to be 10.6 compatible. My link above will give you listing of printers that are 10.6 to 10.10 compatible.
