MBP Hard disk replacement/restore fail, please help

About 2 weeks ago, the disk utility reports says “S.M.A.R.T. status failing”, so I try to replace a new HD to my MBP but fail so many times..

I put a new 750GB HD into my MBP and using command R key to start the process but after the recovery window appears(the one with 4 options-Restore/Install..etc) then the cursor freeze, so I can’t even format nor restore file/ install new system onto the new HD.

I also try to put the new HD in a external case so I can format it and restore all files by Time machine onto it, then I put it back to my MBP but it still can’t start up….

It’s so strange that when I put my Old 500gb HD back to the MBP, it’s all back to normal and working fine….

I’m really frustrated and don’t know what to do now, please kindly help me and thank you very much indeed.

Many thanks!!:)

Hello jackalppe,

Your machine is definitely not "working fine". It has one of those new mystery processes that is running wild. You seem to be able to replace the hard drive properly since it is running again. I suggest you take your machine to an Apple Store (https://www.apple.com/support/contact/) or Authorized Apple Service Centre (https://locate.apple.com/).

Hello, thanks for your advise, yes u r right I feel that it is working in a unstable condition, the new HDD can never be start up by the recovery mode, and the time machine back up is very unstable, just find 1 more strange thing is the EtreCheck results report that my MBP is a Early 2011 model while my system info says it is a Late 2011 model.

many many thanks again! 🙂

Hello again jackalppe,

You are running a very old version of EtreCheck and you have a hacked /etc/hosts file. The model that EtreCheck is reporting looks very much like a "fallback" mode when EtreCheck cannot contact the Apple servers for verification. At some point, I added a "(Verified)" message in the output to confirm that EtreCheck was able to contact Apple and determine your exact machine.

Hello GhonaZ & etresoft! just to let you know I have copy all the files successfully to the new HD by using CCC, it’s quite a good software. Thanks for all your advise. I can use the new HD as a boot up HD now, but when I put the new HD back into the MBP, it fails again….

Today I took the MBP to 3 repair shop and was badly treated with poor manner(they think this is a small money and seems don’t want to do the repair), I’m so unhappy…

Another shop told me that this may be a HD cable problem, it’s quite a common error happen in this model and I can replace it by myself.

The boss claims that the cable is 100% working so I purchased 1 and install on it, the 1st time start up is OK but the “SMART failing status” is still there, so I change another 1 from the shop but when I put the 2nd cable on it OMG my old HD even can’t start up, a apple logo appears with scroll bar running for 3-4 minted then automatically shut down. They refuse to have a change unless I add more money of course I refuse to do so….

Later I find that both are 2nd hand cables and I was being cheated… so unhappy…. sigh…. 😟

Now I’m using the new HD as a external boot up HD. And the disk utility reports that my old HD has lots of problems and it can’t be repaired… 😟

Tomorrow I’ll take it to Authorised Apple Center, hope I can have a better service and the nightmare will gone soon.

Thanks you all GhonaZ & etresoft, you both are very kind and nice people! many many thanks! 🙂
