Q: iTunes backup restore won't finish after update to 9.1

HI there,

after upgrading my iPad Air 2 128gb to IOS 9.1 restoring from iTunes does not finish. The folders are showing unfinished loading circles and most of the apps in the folders appear to be dark (kind of greyed out). The "dark" apps are not working.

I backed up the iPad to iTunes to my Mac Mini right before the upgrade to 9.1, the backup finished without any problem. Before the upgrade I had abou 17gb of free space left on the iPad.

The upgrade did not finish properly. It got stuck on a white screen with a black apple logo. After pressing the home and the on button for longer than 10 seconds I was able to reset the iPad. The new attempt to set it up failed again. After another reset it would install and did a restore which ended up unfinished with lots of dark app icons.

I repeated the procedure for three time but the restore never finished completely. The restores ended up with different numbers of loaded apps varying from about 50 to 70 gb of free space left.

What can I do to get my iPad to finish the restore process?

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

iPad Air, iOS 9.1

    Hi gewewi,

If you are having trouble restoring your iPad from an iTunes backup, try the troubleshooting steps in the resource below.

If you can‘t update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263

Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again

    1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.

    2. While your device is connected, force restart it: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, and don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.

    3. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data. Wait while iTunes downloads the software for your device.

If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits recovery mode, you'll need to repeat these steps and choose Restore instead of Update when you get back to this step.

    4. After the Update or Restore completes, set up your device. If you previously backed up your device with iTunes or iCloud and had to restore your device in step 3, you might be able to restore from your backup during setup.

Thank you for you suggestions Tried that already but it did not help. Other users seem to have this problem too but I could not find any solution exept from abandoning the update and setting up the ipad as a new device.

I can't do that because I need the data for i.e. 1Password, Numbers, Cubasis, etc.

RIght now I am working out of a partly restored backup. The problem is that the apps which have not been restored completely cannot be reloaded from the appstore after I have deleted them from the iPad. The loading indicator in the appstore becomes a full circle and stays that way. The open button does not appear and the app does not appear on the iPad.
