what happens if you insert dvd's or data cd/dvd ? if they all act the same then I would say the drive is the issue
Do any other discs work? It's likely that your SuperDrive has failed but there are a few things you can try. Reset the SMC Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
You can also try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of canned air to clean dust off of the lens.
thank you Mike - other discs [DVD on how to use my new Weber] have worked, and audio disc plays in my car CD player - all three CDs in the "album" set do the same thing; i guess trying a cleaning disc is worth a go before i venture into playing with scary software acronyms! Thank you
Try another audio disc to see if it works. It's not unusual for a dvd to work but cd doesn't as they use different lasers. It's possible for one to fail while the other still works.
