Diagnose ventilator on MacBook Air

My MAcBook Air starts to vent right after I start my Lap. I only have the download application running and at this moment Safari to post this question. Once the vent starts, it becomes really slow. I want to know how can I diagnose the vent (fan) to figure out if I need to replace it.
