I am trying to install El Capitan on a MacBook Pro 5.5. I am getting a message that says "This disk cannot be used to start up your Computer". It is the only hard drive on the computer. I have plenty of space on the hard drive. Current OS is 10.6.8. Any suggestions.

Is the disk using GUID partition map?
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility -> Select your boot disk and look at the bottom of the display
Ok. it is using GUID partition map. What does that mean?
It means my guess was wrong. Sorry, but someone else will have to help, as I do not know why El Capitan will not install.

On install of El Capitan it only sees Macintosh HD not the WD500. Not sure why or it that matters.
