Printing on Canon MP610 from OS El Capitan

Having just upgraded to El Capitan I now cannot print on my Canon MP610. The Canon website helpfully informs me that this printer is not compatible with this OS. I have seen threads about printing on other Canon devices and have tried the advice there, but haven't found anything about this particular printer/scanner. Any advice very gratefully received. BS

The last driver that Canon released for the MP610 was for OS X 10.8. This old driver should install and operate on 10.11 so here is a link to that driver. Note that if Gatekeeper blocks the driver from being opened you can bypass Gatekeeper by selecting the MP610 driver installer then hold down the Control button and click. This will make a small window appear where you can select Open. Now you will be given the option to install the driver.

If there is any problem with using the old Canon driver then you could try installing Gutenprint and then selecting the Gutenprint MP610 driver from the Printers list.

I have also tried to download the Gutenprint driver you suggested but I can't seem to select that application or driver in the Printer/Scanner settings in Sys Prefs. Just doesn't come up as an option at all even though the software is visible in Applications folder. I have also tried to print from Preview using the new Canon driver you suggested, but again Preview simply crashes as soon as I try to print. Can't send a screen grab of error report as it's pages long. made a video of it as I scroll through it but the "attach video" button on this email thread isn't enabled. BS

The MS error report is stating a particular version of the Canon plugin that is responsible for the crash. Looking at the number it seems too new for the driver that you downloaded and installed. So with you having getting the Gutenprint driver you could try removing the printer from Printers & Scanners and then opening Finder and selecting the Go menu then Go to Folder. Here you can type /Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter (or just copy and then paste) and then press the Go button. This will result in a number of Canon driver folders being displayed. You can select all of them and send them to the trash. With that completed, restart the Mac and then empty the trash. Now install the MP610 driver and add the printer again. Then see if you can print from Word and Preview.
