Q: 'A problem repeatedly occurred with [website]' followed by a crash report

This has happened regularly since upgrading to El Capitan.

Specific – but seemingly random – pages won't load (such as this Wikipedia article and this AMA from Reddit) I get a grey screen that explains a problem repeatedly occurred with [web address] with a Reload Webpage button. A Problem Report window also appears, explaining com.apple.WebKit.WebContent quit unexpectedly. Clicking the Reload Webpage button only brings up the grey screen and crash report again.

So far I've tried the following:

• restarted the machine

• made sure OS X is up to date (10.11.1) as well as Flash

• disabled Safari extensions

• starting up Safari while holding down Shift

• removed plug-ins and other add-ons from my Library folders (as per this help article)

• disabled plug-ins, JavaScript and WebGL from the Safari preferences

I don't have any problem loading those pages when logged in as a guest user or in Safe Mode, so I assume the problem is specific to my user account.

Am completely stumped as to how to fix this. Any help would be much appreciated.

You're triggering a bug, but I don't know how. At this point, you have to decide how important it is to pursue the matter. I've posted instructions below in case you do want to pursue it, but those instructions will be quite time-consuming, and I don't know whether they will solve the problem.

There's also the fact that you have an old machine and it's running very slowly, even for its age, which leads me think that there may be a hardware problem. I don't know whether the slowness is related to the crashes. If possible, I suggest that you reinstall the original memory and/or copy the startup volume to an external drive and boot from it. See whether there's any change in performance or stability.

Please back up all data before proceeding.

Hold down the option key and select

              Go Library

from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, move the entire contents of the subfolder "Caches" (not the folder itself) to the Trash, then log out or restart the computer. Empty the Trash. Test.

If the problem is not solved, quit all running applications except the Finder. Open the Library folder again in the same way and move the entire contents of each of the following subfolders

              Application Support

              Containers

              Group Containers

              Preferences

(not the folders themselves) to a new folder on the Desktop (not to the Trash.) The "Group Containers" folder exists only in OS X 10.10 and later. Log out again.

The account will then be pretty much in a clean state. Test. If you can still reproduce the problem, then put all the folder contents back, replacing any that were created in their place, and log out.

To replace a preference file, you may have to move it to the Trash, then put the old one in its place. The change may take effect only after logging out.

If you can't reproduce the problem in the clean state, then start putting things back piecemeal, starting with items that seem unrelated to the issue. I can’t be more specific. After each group of items, log out and test. At some point, the problem may reappear, in which case you know that something in the last batch of files you restored is at fault. If it never reappears, the problem is solved.

The machine is indeed old and slow to boot up and get to a useable state, but once running it's quite responsive. Usually...

The crashes only occur occasionally but once they happen to a particular page they always happen on that page from then on. It's a problem I can live with, for now at least.

Thank you so much for all your help on this. It's really much appreciated.
