Do you have the OS X install-restore DVD for the system version running in the computer?
If so, have you tried booting from that disc while holding the C key down (until you see a
desktop appear, to be sure it really is trying) and then check the hard drive by using the
Disk Utility version in the menu bar options from the Installer? (do not engage the installer)
Given the Disk Utility and other Installer disc utilities, you may be able to check &/or repair
some aspects of the system; or plan on a reinstallation on another hard drive. You may be
able to access the failed hard drive (if that's the issue) even if it won't boot, by use of an
external enclosure or a universal USB drive kit, for accessing bare hard drives, to get info
and your old files from there.
Could be some thing else or in addition to the font issue, such as bad HDD sectors, or a
failing hard disk drive, may be the problem now.
Where did you get a font for your old vintage OS X? -- I'd be suspicious of some sites
because of what else they may harbor, such as adware or other unwanted stuff...
Not sure if you have a backup of the original system in an external HDD, a clone, or etc. 😐
