I'll be getting an iMac 27" 5k Retina display for Christmas and I was wondering if the Apple SuperDrive plays blu-rays or would I have to buy a usb 3 blu-ray player?

Are you talking about an external Superdrive?
If you are that doesn't support Blu-Ray either.

You would need to to purchase an external, USB Blu-ray drive in order to play Blu-rays on your Mac.
In addition, you will need Blue Ray software because OS X does not support Blue Ray natively.
Does the Apple SuperDrive play Blu-Ray discs?
