El Capitan will not load after starting

I am trying to upgrade my MacBook(2010) model from Snow Leopard to El Capitan. It shows starting to load and then immediately stops. After a period of time I get a message that I am not connected or try again.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Have you backed up your data?

I'd do that before installing.

I'd also read this tip before installing:

I had not backed up and my memory stick is not large enough to hold the data. Need to get a larger one. Also this will not solve my problem which is that the download function for downloading El Capitan hangs up at the beginning of the download and says to check my internet connection and try again. Also does not work when I do that.
