iPhone 6S does not sync with Snow Leopard

I just had an iPhone 6S+ gifted to me as my iPhone 5 was nearing 3 years old with a failing battery. However, this is not syncing with my older Mac Pro 1,1 running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I have to download a newer version of iTunes 12 which, naturally, cannot install on this OS. As far as I know, Lion is the latest version of OS X this machine can run, period, and the newest iTunes won't run on Lion either.

I realize the obvious option is to upgrade my machine but that is unacceptable just because I've gotten a new phone. Going back to the 5 is also not a possibility since the phone has been recycled. So I need some kind of solution or at least a temporary workaround so I can get some of my old iPhone settings back.

The "temporary workaround" is to use iCloud instead of iTunes.

As you discovered, there is no way to sync your iPhone with your current computer's iTunes.

Thank you for the reply, sberman. Is there a way to send my old iTunes backup to iCloud and sync from there? Or must it be originally synced from a phone?

No, your iTunes backup cannot be sent to iCloud.

You are out of luck trying to use that iTunes backup until you secure a new computer. Hopefully you'll do that very soon (if you ever wish to use the iTunes backup), as restoring that backup will wipe out all the current contents of your iPhone.
