Can I have fixed value increments on both axes, like a piece of graph paper?

I want to enter two values on a chart, draw a line through them and read the positions of other data points from that line. But when I try to make a chart in Numbers 3.6.1, the x-axis doesn't seem to be able to have fixed increments, so the data points don't occur in a fixed relationship to each other. I hope that makes sense; it's not easy to describe.

Hi Jane,

Uncross your fingers. The screen shot came through.

I'm not sure of your aim, so I played with some charts.

Here is a 2-D Line. The categories are in a Header Column.

Columns A and B selected for the chart.

Here is a 2-D Scatter.

Only Columns B and C (not Header Columns) selected for the chart

Thanks, Ian, the 2D scatter was what I wanted because it shows the range of body weights on the x-axis. I had tried a scatter chart but it didn't work; I tried arranging the columns that way, too but still no result, not sure why. My brain was definitely on low-power mode yesterday. Anyway, thanks again. This is the chart:
