Q: Apple TV showing black screen but giving audio for 30 seconds.

Hi

I have a Mac Book Pro (mid 2014) retina display.

I am running OS X El Capitan 10.11.1

Apple TV 3rd Generation

From yesterday, apple TV started stuttering now i just have a black screen when i try to mirror my display via Airplay.

The small square icon on my display turns blue as normal.

I do get audio, but only for 30 seconds before apple TV auto disconnects.

I have read the rather useless apple TV trouble shooting guides.

I have reset and updated apple TV

I have restored factory settings from the Apple TV menu and logged in.

What alternative solutions are there?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

    Welcome to the Apple Community.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

    1. Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
    2. Check that both devices are on the same network (System Preferences > Network, on the Mac and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
    3. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    4. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    5. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    6. Restart your computer.

If you are still having problems, try turning off bluetooth if it's enabled, also try using 802.11n for wifi if you are currently using either 802.11b or 802.11g.

hahahaha. I went through each one and was generally getting quite annoyed until your last suggestion of turning the laptop off and on.......

I thought apple were beyond the old turn it off and on again trick.

Thanks for you help..... i'll revert back to my pc mentality of, if in doubt turn it off and on!
