Ipod isnt compatible with Itunes.

I have an IPod Shuffle 3rd Generation, it hasn't been charged for a while and isnt the original cable, but my laptop is recognising it as a USB device not an Ipod? But I also have an IPhone 5C which is why I originally downloaded iTunes on my new laptop. When I plug in my shuffle the orange light appears shortly, and iTunes appears yet it doesn't recognise it on the iTunes software like it would my phone...

Is there anyway I can try backwards compatibility or a older version of iTunes?

Or anyway that I can get them to work together?
