I have a 2013 Mac Pro with 32 gigs of RAM 8 cores and dual 700 GPU.
When I play a project back by pressing the space bar, the audio clips when it tries to play. It cuts in and out like I'm working on a really old Mac that can't handle this.
Is anyone else able to do basic sound with Motion 5?

It will do this if you have a complex or long enough project. You can turn off features not being used in the Render menu, such as shadow, etc. That will help with playback. A screen shot of your project timeline would help. Also, what codec and duration is this audio file?
I've been using Motion since version 1 and it was able to play audio without any hiccups on a much slower Mac, several years ago.
I have a very simple project here with a small number of layers.
I'll try turning off the shadow and other features to see if that helps.
