Q: Canon Pixma MP620 Scanning and OSX 10.11 El Capitan

Canon Pixma MP620 worked fine for scanning with USB cable or networked, until I upgraded to El Capitan on my MBPro.

I've tried all the usual fixes for this: check AppStore to make sure I'm all up to date on drivers and such, deleting contents of /Library/Printers/Canon, reinstalling Scangear (incidentally, Canon doesn't have Scangear sw posted for 10.11) -- but all I get is a communications error -9923 when setting up the Printer/Scanner system setting or when Image Capture attempts to connect to it.  This is with a direct USB cable connection.  Anyone have a solution, short of purchasing a new scanner?
