Photos won't import since upgrade

I installed the Mac upgrade on Nov 19 that updated the photos app and now it won't import any of my photos from my camera. The progress bar never moves (have waited as long as 10 hours) and won't "stop import" (that has never even actually started) without hard shut down of computer... Please HELP!!
