Safari (Yosemite 10.11.1) freezes after typing in 3rd (three, 3) character

Since the latest update, Safari freezes four about 10 seconds (including the spinning beachball) after typing in the 3rd character. I tried in private mode (without extensions) disabled all search-related options, cleared cache and history. Still happens. I still think it has to do something with the shown search results below the url-textfield. It must be some code that is run after the 3rd character was entered. Any hints how to fix it?

Regards,

Eric.

Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Hey Eric,

thanks for the detailed steps. I did the quick version (without the backup 😉).

Safari in the new admin account worked. fine.

I went back to my problematic user and check the Activity Monitor. When Safari freezes, a process popped up from Safari: Safari-Webinhalt (15439). The name the process was named after the URL that made Safari freeze. The URL was a website from my browser history. So I deleted the browser history and everything was fine.

The thing is: Safari didn't freeze with all typed in queries in the URL bar, but only with some. For example it freezed with "https://ssl.all4golf.de" (which was a page of a checkout from a Golf webpage). Could it be that Safari has issues preloading websites with special sessions or SSL certificates? Since Safari probably preloads the most relevant search results as the user types in a query, it might have had a problem preloading an website with an SSL certificate? Just a wild guess.

However, deleting the browser history "solved" my problem, but the history is gone now. Not a perfect solution, but it helped. 😉

Best,

Eric.
