It sounds like you were sharing your Apple ID with your wife who now wants to have her own ID, but you are concerned about access to existing purchases.
It is good for everyone to have their own Apple ID. However purchases are linked to the Apple ID that purchased them.
The good news is families can now share purchases within the family.
See Family Sharing - Apple Support for details.
Family Sharing makes it easy for up to six people in your family to share each other’s iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases without sharing accounts. Pay for family purchases with the same credit card and approve kids’ spending right from a parent’s device. And share photos, a family calendar, and more to help keep everyone connected.
For further information on Apple IDs please browse Apple ID - Apple Support
Best regards.
