The Time Capsule was designed to be used to back up your Mac via Time Machine. These back up your entire Mac's content ... but is not a bootable-type backup. A bootable backup is used when you have a complete hard drive failure and you want to get back up and running quickly by using this type of backup to "startup" your computer. This is where software, like Carbon Copy Cloner, come into play. Typically you would use an external USB drive as the destination for these types of backups. When you experience a drive failure, you would just plug the USB drive into your Mac's USB port and start up the computer. You can then use it as is until you can get the internal drive repaired or replaced.
