upgraded OS from snow leopard to el capitan. I had both os versions on partitioned HD. I am trying to remove all partitions and use all of drive for el capitan. i am not technically savvy enough to try and do this on Terminal. I have system backed up on time machine.

yes. i created a mess on the hard drive. All i want to do is all of the disk space for el capitan; resize and use all 500Gb. Right now I have it at 65Gb. It won't let me erase the partitions i don't need. any help would be appreciated.
You can not delete partition 1 without deleting partition 2. You will have to erase the whole disk, make one partition and restore your El Capitan installation backup to it.
