I have moved my documents onto the iCloud Drive and now I can't open them. Why?

Here are some details:
I open Finder, go into iCloud Drive and go to the document (Word or Excel) and double click on it. Word then opens and offers me the start a new document page. With Word open I click File, open then find the document and double click. Next I get a message saying
"The document "Doc Name" could not be opened."
The same thing happens with Excel.
There are no icons, all the files look normal. When I double click on them the application opens but the document does not.
I'm going off line now but will be back on around this time tomorrow. I might have called Apple by then, if I do then I'll let you know what the problem was. Thanks for your help so far.
Forgive me if this is a topic already covered but I wonder why I can't simply open and read a pdf in iCloud drive without it being auto downloaded first.
I was considering using iCloud when abroad without my MacBook but I'm wary of being unable to find and delete files downloaded to a public PC.
May be sacrilege to mention this here but there is no problem reading pdf uploaded to and stored on Google Drive.
Whether you are aware of it or not, if you can read your document on Google Drive from a computer then it has been downloaded to that computer. If you have any further questions about this, it would be best if you started your own thread.
I gather you are not able to offer an answer as to why pdf can't be read only on Apple iCloud Drive.

With regard to Google Drive it now seems to incorporate a pdf reader called, I think, Firmin?

That's simply impossible, please read my initial answer and think about it for a moment. As requested earlier please start another thread if you have any further questions, this thread is about the original posters problem which is unrelated to yours.

What happens when you try, please provide a few more details.
Are you able to open these documents from your mobile device or after moving (or copying) them to your desktop.
Yes, if I move the document to the desktop then I can open it.
That's odd. Are there any icons by them when they are in iCloud Drive. What happens if you try double clicking them to open them rather than the application.
