Does anyone know an alternate way to take a screenshot on my iPhone 5s if the sleep/home button option will not work?
iPhone 5s, iOS 9.1
Not that I am aware of. What happens when you try pressing the two buttons together? Have you had any issues with either of the buttons working for anything else?
Enable Assistive Touch. Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch. In the screen where you're given the option to tap on icons to customize, tap on one and change it to Screen Shot.
I hit Solved by mistake.
Nothing happens at all.
If I hold them too long the phone will reset, but I haven't experienced any issues so fr!

Meg has provided a workaround, but I usually accomplish the screenshot by holding the sleep/wake button and then momentarily tap the home button. If that does not work, it sounds as if one of your buttons is not working properly.
Thanks to you both. Meg, I am seeing where I can choose the screen shot option in Assistive touch, but it's still not working.
Looks like I have a problem. Since I just received a replacement since my previous one just stopped working all together I just will have to live with the fact that I can't take screen shots. Pretty annoying since this is such a nice feature.

It is company issued...as was the one before. maybe they turned it off this time? worked with my previous phone about 2 weeks ago.
