Having trouble copying FCPX Libraries to Drobo

Around six months ago I set up a new Drobo 5n to store my husband's Final Cut Pro X Libraries. Then we took our old Drobo FS and made it a synchronized backup of the new Drobo using Chronosync on a Mac mini. This worked for quite a while. We recently updated the Mac mini to El Capitan.

We started having a problem where the destination machine (old Drobo) was filling up. We figured out the culprit, the destination versions of the .fcpbundle libraries were on the order of TWENTY TIMES the size of the source bundles on the new Drobo.

We scraped the old Drobo and started over with Chronosync and it happened again. The old Drobo got so full that we were unable to even access it to delete things.

I did an experiment after resetting the old Drobo - I simply tried to drag a .fcpbundle Library from the new to the old. It showed me a progress bar of 7000'ish files "preparing to copy" for quite some time and then came back and said an unexpected error occurred (code -50). I did this on a different Mac, which is also running El Capitan.

Note that I can drag folders of audio, photos, text files from New to Old Drobo without any issues.

So...is there a trick to moving Final Cut Pro X Libraries that changed in the last six months or so?

thanks!
