usb credit card swiper stopped working

I upgraded our business laptop to el capitan. We run a software called MindBody, and our USB credit card swiper worked perfectly before the OSX upgrade. Now it stopped working. A credit card swipe produces no data in MindBody Software or even offline on the computer itself.

Normally, I'd go into preferences > keyboard and re-install the USB swiper, but it doesn't even let me do that anymore in El Capitan.

Our business relies on the USB scanner to process much of our sales, and the swiping method produces the cheapest fee. We need to find a fix to this issue, so we can get back to business as usual.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Having issues with USB since upgrade as well. My USB 10/100 LAN adapter is no longer detected by the laptop (macbook air) and neither is the USB speaker I've been using with no problem until I upgraded. Speaker works fine with windows and as a bluetooth output.

Googling 'usb problems with El Capitan osx' brought up a few more examples of users having similar problems.
