Q: reinstall windows on bootcamp

moved to a new iMac from old mac pro.  have my drive with bootcamp on it running on an external drive.  has been working fine.  today, after installing a parallels update, windows fails to start.  several attempts at startup repair have yielded nothing.  i am running windows 7.  is there a way to reinstall windows without destroying the programs i have there?

 

i have an external DVD reader.

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

    PS  because, i think, Boot Camp is on an external drive, i can't boot from it. 

     

    i have also used Time Machine to restore Parallels Desktop to yesterday's version, but get the same result.

     

    i should, i guess, not that during the Parallels upgrade it was suggested to change the video memory allocation, which i did.

    1. Do you still have your old MacPro?

    2. From Install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support, the last iMac to support W7 64-bit is

    Is this what you have?

    3. How is the external drive connected to the iMac, USB, FW, TB,...?

    4. Parallels has it's own BIOS emulation and NTFS drivers. These drivers can cause NTFS corruption, especially on external disks, if the drive is ejected incorrectly, or has connection issues.

    5. Repairing W7 is much easier on the old MacPro, rather than the iMac5k.

    6. The drivers installed on the W7 are/were specific to the old MacPro. Moving to a different hardware platform (your GPUs, audio cards, BT) are all different, so it is a bit surprising that W7 ran fine under Bootcamp on the iMac 5k at all. If it ran fine under Parallels, after it was moved to the iMac and has never been run before under Bootcamp on the iMac 5K, the first run under Bootcamp on the 5K will cause failures and should have resulted in BSODs.

    Yes, this what I have. I no longer have the Mac Pro.

     

    I Have not run under boot camp in years.

     

    Tthe drive is in a sonnet echo 15 hub which is connected to the iMac with a thunderbolt cable

     

    i was so happy when this worked. Not so much now

    A Note. The drive, which used to be in an internal bay in the Mac Pro, was in an enclosure attached by USB. I moved it to the bay inside the sonnet just yesterday. I am pretty sure I ran parallels the nice, because I remember getting the new version message.

    3. Did Parallels/W7 work when connected via TB, after Parallels Update?

    4. Are/Were there any Windows Updates at any of these points in time?

    4. I have no idea. They seem to happen without any action on my part. I can sometimes tell by the amount of disk activity, but I don't remember.

    Does the W7/TB show up as a selectable Startup Disk in iMac System Preferences -> Startup Disk? If yes, can you test booting directly from it? Be aware that this may fail because Parallels has been hiding BC driver issues and it can cause worse problems. You may want to backup critical data before experimenting.

    Can you post the output of the following Terminal commands?

     

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

    sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/diskN

    sudo fdisk /dev/diskN

     

    You need to pick a value of "N" from the output of the first command which points to the TB/external Windows disk.

     

    The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

    Please post the output of

     

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk4s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

     

    Parallels may also have pointers internally, which can point to a specific disk path and it can change based on disk discovery that the firmware will run at boot time.

     

    Can you check Application -> Utilities -> Console logs for any disk-related messages?

    i did not notice any disk related things in the console log.  a little later, i will try to launch again and see what shows up.

    while this conversation has been going on, i involved Parallels support.  first line support spend about an hour logged into my machine before bumping it up to 2nd level.  this seemed to be like something they had seen before.

     

    2nd level contacted me today and asked me to demonstrate the error.

     

    it worked perfectly. 

     

    ????

     

    i ascribed magical powers to this person.

     

    thanks for your help, but it looks like my kludgy arrangement is back to working.
