why does idvd not open?

Why does idvd not open in IMovie after I have gone to "share" selected idvd. It takes about 17 mins to process and then nothing happens? This is the first time I have created an iMovie. I first created a slideshow in iPhoto then realized that I can't burn that to a disk. So I have now created an iMovie and still having problems. I am not computer dumb. If someone can just tell me what to do, I'll get 'er done. Thanks,
