I need to upgrade my OS 10.7.4 to 10.9 or higher for a program I need. How do I do that?

I have a MacBook Pro A1278. The current OS is 10.7.4. I am trying to use a photo editing program that requires 10.9 or higher. Can I upgrade my OS? If so, where and how? Thank you!

Back up your data,check your applications for compatibility, and download El Capitan from the Mac App Store.
