Safari just keeps getting worse and worse. I enabled extended addresses (why?) in the address bar, but how can I tell if it’s http or https? They left out this part of the address. For some stupid reason.

https is a secure Internet protocol (you see a lock in the address bar)

That doesn't accomplish very much anyway. Just click your cursor anywhere in the field and the complete URL will appear, regardless of the "Smart Search Field" selection. From there, you can choose to copy it, or drag it to Mail or Messages, for example.
Never mind, If you click on the partial address it moves to the left and shows the whole thing. Are they just trying to be fancy or what?
Thanks for the replies. I've been using macs since 1985 and they seem to have lost their commitment to the user. I think I know why.
