Had an xlsx document open on excel. Set print area and now can't close page or excel. It keeps spinning. How do I fix on my mac

I had a xlsx document open on excel. I set the print area but print never came up. I hit red button to close and the black dot is showing, but it won't close and I can't close Excel either. It keeps spinning. I have a mac desktop computer. What can I do to close the document and excel. Thank you,

Pat

You are likely to lose the document using this method. I hope it is saved.

Click on the Apple (top left), navigate to 'Force Quit' choose Excel.

After force quit - close all your open applications and do an apple menu/shutdown to clear any bits the force quit leaves running.

If you are running Yosemite other mac site has recommended shutting down at least once a week to clean up ram.

That is not needed.

Site recommending it is OSXdaily.com - as a way to clear junk from memory.

With modular programming -a called module may not end after a crash -- known issue - worst culprit is C++ language.

I Shutdown after use - because I see no point in leaving a device on - that I won't be using any time soon.
