how to connect a usb monitor to MBP mid 2012 through thunderbolt to reduce lag time?

Have a mid-2012 13' MBP 8G RAM using an additional monitor an AOC USB which experiences lag time which causes serious frustration. Would it be possible to reduce the lag time if it were connected through the Thunderbolt port, is it possible, and what adapter would I need?
