Not letting me download Java

Hello, I need to download the latest version of Java on my iMac for some Excel tests I need to do but everytime I try I get the below message come up, is there any way round this apart from getting the 10.7 ? I do have a Java update pending in my Software update list but everyime I try and do the update, when I restart the computer it just goes to that bright "Galaxy" type screen with nothing on it and stays there for hours and I have to turn the machine off to get back, thanks for any help

You have Mac OS X 10.6.8. The application requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later."

Well, the message is pretty clear. You are running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, and the latest version of Java 8 requires Lion, 10.7.x at minimum. You can't use Java 8 without upgrading the OS.
