Strain Relief

So I just found out today about the strain relief issue with the mag safe chargers, mostly because my charger stopped working and I was looking into it. I bought a refurbished MacBook in the US in 2012, but have been living, and still live, in Ireland. Is there anything I can do to claim a new charger, or am I stuck paying for a new one. It seems Apple has been very reluctant to be straight forward about these kind of things, and I am very annoyed, to put it mildly.
