Forward the mail to reportphishing@apple.com and then delete it. These things occur. You should not interact with them, click any links or call any numbers.

II've emailed the sender and told them I've reported it to the police.....
You just confirmed that your email address is real and functional, get ready for more spam/phishing.
NEVER interact with the senders of these type of emails.

I suspect they probably don't even monitor that address, but whatever. As long as you did not click on any links, you are safe.

Now the sender knows your e-mail address is valid active. You just made it more valuable to the address brokers.
As given, it is not a good idea to respond to scammers at all.

TThanks for that advice, I'll adopt it should it happen again. The email was retuned by my email provider, stating that the reply could note be delivered.
That is because spammers change email addresses faster than an eye can blink (to avoid getting caught).
