MacBook Pro 17in 2.16Ghz Duo OVERHEATING???????????

I just got a brand new MBP 2.16GHz Duo from a friend who had it stored in its box under the bed...anyway is brand new !!!!. I love it , but in this couple of days I have been using it I noticed that it heats pretty bad when running , specially when it is connected to the power supply? is this normal? will I have any problems with it?....I've had a MacBook 13in 2Ghz Duo for a few months , and even though this one heats a lot , it never gets as hot as my new MBP.

Any help will be apprecited. I need to have a little piece of mind !!!. Thanks

It is normal , in fact I went to the apple store close to my home and touched every MBP over the tables. All of it works hot.
Yesterday ,I updated my MBP with the new firmware and appears to be cooler than before .
Right now I'm writing this lines with my computer over my lap and nothing happened with my skin in half hour.
Sorry for my English but it is not my primary language ,if someone find a mistake try to forgive me.

I noticed the same thing with my MBP- and read in the manual that it is not meant to be sitting on soft surfaces like pillows, sheets, clothing because it blocks the air vents on the bottom side of the book.

On hard surfaces, my darling runs at around 52C and 61C when I'm working on multiple programmes....otherwise, when sitting on my pillow- it gets very hot- around 62C so I try to avoid resting it on places where the air flow might be blocked.

Download this program. It will go into your Sys Preferences and run automatically. It monitors the temperature of your computer and adjusts the Fan speed to cool down the processor. Set the base speed to 1200 RPM, lower Threshold to about 47 degrees Celcius and upper Threshold to 70 degrees.

These are the settings I use and it really works.

Sorry to tell you guy, its true the MacBook Pro is a HOT running son-of-cpu. I’ve actually burned of the chrome letters at the bottom of the screen. Using a widget I’ve monitored my 15” 2 GHz to temps over 160°. Try to keep the MBP off the carpet or bed; they insulate the computer like the Pink Panther. Keeping it on a hard surface keeps a little airflow beneath and cools it down. If you’re hardcore like me and need that puppy to push until it dies look into getting laptop cooler or a docking station I know there’s a company developing a workstation for your 17”. The name of the company is Book Endz here is their website. http://www.bookendzdocks.com . I’ve seen their products on a number of sites; they’ve been around since Black G3. The docking station doesn’t have a cooler but it does have a hard surface to get a little air flow.

The Fan Control program really and I mean REALLY works....I installed in my MacBook pro 17in 2.16GHz and it made a HUUUUUUUGE difference.., I can now use it on my lap without getting first degree burns. .I also installed it on my 13.3 MacBook 2Ghz and it also made a difference...I have a question though, does the MacBook 13 only has one fan? (FanControl only shows one working fan, unlike the MBPro that shows 2). Anyone has any info?

Thanks again for that incredible program...

Best;

hi Clint,

removing the battery pack will dramatically lower the temperature but...the processor speed will drop to 1Ghz. I personally often use my MBP without the pack and the reduced speed does not prevent me to use Aperture, Safari and iTunes at very decent speed. With the battery pack, I am usually at 60 to 85 degrees celcius and without it, I am typically around 40 to 55C...
I am also using SMCfan, pushing my fans from 1000 to 2000 before rebooting under Bootcamp/Windows (the fans values are kept and still valid after the reboot). No battery pack + boosting fan speed (from time to time) makes my MBP an even cooler machine now !

Bye !
/Phil
