I recently updated my iphone from ios 8.4 to 9.1
My iphone 5 initially showed 32 gb as the total storage. After the update, the total memory is shown as 16 gb. I have tried the resets and also checked the imei code to check the initial configurations which all point that it is a 32 gb model.
Has anyone faced similar challenge and would you happen to know a solution to this please?

What is the model number of your device? And where are you seeing this discrepancy? What is the exact number of GB that is showing and what is the description of the field that is displaying that info?

The model number is A1429
When I connect to iTunes, the total storage capacity is displayed as 16GB after the update.
In the iPhone itself, i am checking at the following location:
Settings > General > About > Capacity - 12.6 GB
and
Settings > General >Storage & iCloud Usage - Used 5.6 GB and Available 6.7 GB
What is the model number at: Settings - General - About - Model = ???
Here it is:
Settings - General - About - Model = MD297J/A
That model is a 16gB unit.
Yeah - the model number that Stedman asked about was the one I was looking for. Not sure why you were thinking it was a 32GB device? There is no way the iOS would change the total GB capacity for a device, so that is why we wanted to confirm the model number. As Stedman indicated - it is a 16GB model, so that is what you have always had.

Where my confusion arose - I checked the IMEI number online where it showed the model to be 32 GB version. Is there a possibility of the data being wrong there? I am checking from http://www.imei.info/.
Yes, any such site will be useless when checking such info.
