Q: Mail: Comcast account already exists

OS X 10.11.1 on a late 2013 iMac. I am trying to move my Comcast email account from pop3 to imap. After saving the email messages that I wanted to keep in a local folder, I deleted the comcast account in Preferences/Accounts. When I try to add the comcast account back in, I get the message that the account already exists. It is nowhere in account preferences, calendar, contacts or notes. I am not logged in to the account via Safari.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get around this?

Thanks.

1st, verify that you're following the proper instructions from Comcast for setting up IMAP.

2nd, the outgoing mail server settings for previous accounts are not deleted when you you delete an account. The catch 22 is that you need to delete the outgoing settings before deleting the account settings. So, you may need to add the account back to be able to access the outgoing settings.

Thanks Lanny. The smtp entry in Mail Preferences was the issue. Once that was deleted, I could re-add the comcast account with imap.
