install and connect canon lbp 2900 laser printer on MacBook

I have successfully installed on my MacBook Pro a driver for the Canon LBP 2900 laser printer. The printer shows up in the printers list with a green dot and the remark "Idle, last used". However, upon a PRINT command the printer's icon appears briefly in the dock, then disappears and nothing else happens. The print queue is empty.

Has anyone an idea what I could have omitted to keep the LBP 2900 from printing?
