Boot Up Slowness - Power Button Restart Required

Hardware: iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2013.

Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5.

Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

HD: 1 TB

OS: 10.11.1 (El Capitan)

Symptom: Sometimes (maybe every 3rd time) when powering up from completely being off over night, the progress bar beneath the Apple logo will go only half way, or a little more and just stay there. I've waited up to 10 minutes and then had to press the power button, the subsequent reboot then completed with normal speed. Sometimes there is then a message about improper shut down. When Restarted from the Apple menu (during normal use), the reboot process is at the normal speed.

I do not remember this happening prior to upgrading to El Capitan from OS 10.10.5, but it may have, but not with the current frequency. I do not know if this is hardware or software.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), 21.5" Late 2013, 2.7 GHz, i5

If you can get the computer to boot up, please run an EtreCheck report of the computer, then copy and paste the results to your reply to this message. Once we see the report we can look for obvious issues. If you cannot get it to boot try booting into the Recovery Partition by holding down Command + R on startup and opening Disk Utility and run First Aid 2--3 times and see if any errors appear.

You have installled

com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist [Click for support]

[loaded] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Agent.plist [Click for support]

Both apps are malware and of zero benefit to your system. Both need to be uninstalled. NEVER install antivirus, cleaning or any third party maintenance apps on a Mac. They are not needed and in most cases cause more problems than they solve.

Thank you, I appreciate your evaluation of the report. I do have a follow-up:

I am actually using CleanMy Mac 3, I never uninstalled version 2 (just did so now). However, I've never had a problem such as this boot up issue that I could attribute to CleanMyMac.

MacWorld reviewed CleanMyMac 3 and gave it 4 out of 5 mice. http://www.macworld.com/article/2915929/cleanmymac-3-review-make-more-room-on-yo ur-crowded-hard-drive.html So I am puzzled by your recommendation. I see that you are "Level 9" here at the forum, so you know what you're talking about.

I would appreciated any further thoughts/info from you. Thanks.

Do you also shut off power to the IMac (say shut off the spike stick?) If so, may be an issue with recharging the internal backup battery. If you have an everything mac booklet -- in mine - fact that the battery may need changing is in making things better -- not in problems meet solutions.

I recently had an issue with power up not completing after a couple of days of minimal use. I remembered a posting on this site where the OP solved his problem by replacing the internal backup battery.

My test was to disconnect usb devices that do not have off switches - then leave the system off with the spike stick on for a couple of hours and was then able to start up no problem - but also went out and purchased a new battery (actually had to buy 2 for $6.00) and will replace it.

I don't know what you mean by a spike stick, is that a UPS or surge supressor? I always turn off the iMac using the Shut Down command from the Apple Menu.

I do have the iMac connected to an APC brand UPS. My iMac was purchased new in August of 2014 from an Apple Store.

Spike stick is the brand on the think I plug my monitor, Mac, and backup drive power into - has an on off switch and plugs into an outlet so guess its a surge supressor.

My old power mac will power up even though the internal battery is dead - just needs electricity hook up. My aluminum mac pro won't complete the power up unless the internal battery is charged up even though it has power. As your apple is off guessing there may be an issue with your internal battery.
