Q: Typing lag and errors in Keynote outline view.

I've submitted feedback to Apple, but I wanted to check in here to see if anyone else is seeing this.

The issue has been replicated in Keynote 6.6 and 6.6.1. We don't currently have any previous versions installed, so none have been tested.

Systems tested: New MBP, 2 yr. old MBP, new MacBook Air, and Mac Pro. A mix of OS X 10.11 and 10.10.

We've ruled out unruly non-Keynote processes and RAM usage.

The issue:

Typing within the outline view in the left pane, there is significant lag between key press and display of characters on the screen. Letter order is often incorrect once rendered and many letters are dropped entirely as well. This occurs at slower to moderate typing speed and is more pronounced at faster typing speeds.

Typing directly in the slide is less problematic, though a distinct lag is still discernible.

File size seems to have no effect on this issue.

I have never heard of this issue as a fault of Keynote before, there are no similar issues listed in the community.

I have dealt with a number of keyboard problems over the years, faulty batteries, wifi interference dirt in the membrane of the keys etc etc.

Have you tested a known to work wired keyboard in place of the existing one?

If this has no effect,  try a reset of Keynote by deleting Keynote from applications, empty trash and re-install from Mac App Store.

    Thanks for the reply, Gary.

I had the same thought regarding potential problems with the keyboard. I've now replicated this on built-in keyboards on 2 laptops as well as 3 machines with wired keyboards. For the sake of thoroughness, I tested the laptops with a brand spanking new wired keyboard as well.

I've blown up and reinstalled Keynote on two of the tested systems with no change to this issue. I felt satisfied that this wasn't going to fix the problem, so I stopped there. I'll give it a go on a couple of the other machines just to be thorough.

To clarify, to reproduce the problem I'm doing the following: create a new document with 3-4 slides containing a handful of bullet points (with text) in each slide. The left column is set to show the outline view. At this point, typing within the slide is a touch laggy at faster typing speeds, but acceptible. Typing within the outline view is where it gets clunky, drops letters, and shuffles letters.

Have you tried deleting Keynote from applications folder and reinstalling from Mac App Store?

I am also experiencing this issue. I'm running the latest version of Keynote, installed from Mac App Store, in a 2013 13" Retina MBP. I get lag and dropped characters using a wired keyboard and the internal keyboard. I get no such lag with other applications.

I'll try deleting Keynote and reinstalling per Gary's recommendation, but I don't have high hopes, given what's reported by you.

Update. Deleted Keynote and reinstalled it, and the problem persists. Since I rely on Outline mode, this makes Keynote useless for me.

Good thing I have Powerpoint, or I'd be screwed.

    Hi Gary, thanks for replying.

is the Mac connected to a second monitor?

    > No. It has been connected to external monitors in the past, but is not currently connected.

    how much RAM is installed?

    > 16GB, preinstalled by Apple.

what amount of free space is available on the system drive

    > 87% of the SSD is free.

is there any non Apple software installed including:

is antivirus or system security software installed

    is "cleaning" software installed

    >Yes, of course I have non-Apple software installed. I do not have AV or system security software installed. I do not have "cleaning" software installed, nor have I ever done so.

I just experienced this too. I rarely use outline mode, but switched to it to quickly enter some content, and discovered after touchtyping multiple bullets that most of my text was not registered. Googled and ended up here, but no solution. Is it just a stupid implementation of key handling?

Yes, Apple seem to have significantly regressed the outline view in Keynote 6.6.1 (2560) compared to Keynote 5.x and previous versions of Keynote on my (admittedly rather old) MBP running MacOS 10.11.4.

The outline view had annoying bugs in Keynote 5.x: e.g., the way that raising and lowering the outline level of bullet points is handled on the outline is inconsistent with how it is handled in the slide view (the styles are broken when changing levels from the outline view). I was disappointed to see that rather than the outline view getting fixed in Keynote 6.x, it was instead made even less usable on my system.

I have also submitted feedback to Apple, additionally pointing out the still-lingering outline view flaws from Keynote 5.x.

I too am experiencing this with Keynote 6.6.2 and 6.6.1 before it. I too have submitted feedback to Apple.
