My 2009 MacBook is in need of a new charger and a new battery, however I cannot afford to replace both at the same time. I'm hoping there is someone in the community who might have a tip for me on which is more important to replace first and/or which SHOULD be replaced first.

If you can only afford one, replace the charger. You should be able to use the MacBook Pro connected to the charger even with a dead battery.
If you only replace the battery, your MacBook Pro will be unusable since you have no way to charge the battery.
OK great thanks for the help. I was just a little concerned hat the old battery might affect a new charger but that is a logical response as it were, thanks again

Depending on the seller's reputation at eBay, you might find a replacement Apple charger for a good price. Be careful of the cheapest price listed. Before buying a charger, research your particular model charger carefully as this will benefit your purchase happiness greatly. Make sure you know the difference between the original MagSafe and the MagSafe 2 connector.
