Recently uploaded El Capitan, came home the other day and external speakers were buzzing like a dodgy power supply sound-they are a problem,but now the start up chime has disappeared-wondered if there was a reason......

If it is still not chiming after resetting the SMC...? Unplug your external speakers and try adjusting the level of your internal speaker.
