Accessing my iPod after being locked out

My iPod was locked out by my niece when she was playing with it, and now I'm trying to figure out how to get back in to it. I was prompted on the home screen to log in to iTunes, which I did. I could not figure out what to do there so I logged in to iCloud and tried to erase my device from there so I could log in to my iCloud account and get back on it, with all my stuff. So I erased it from the website on the computer, but then it said that it would begin erasing once it was connected to the Internet. Yet the iPod's screen is still saying that it is disabled, and to connect to iTunes. I cancelled the erasing because nothing was happening anyways. Can someone please walk me through this? I'm quite frustrated and don't know what to do at this point.

Disabled

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

For how to restore:

iTunes: Restoring iOS software

To restore from backup see:

Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
