On the most recent version of Pages (5.6.1), I am trying to select only some text for center alignment, while the rest of the text should retain its normal alignment. Whenever I try to do this, it aligns the entire document to the center. I've even created a separate paragraph style for this, but it still happens.
What am I doing wrong?
Never mind. I tried copying the text, pasting into TextWrangler to neutralize it, repasted it in to a new document, and then it worked normally. Somehow exporting it from another application caused this to happen. (Which kind of messes up my workflow when I need to export a manuscript, stylize it for submission to an editor, and save it again as a Word document, but I guess I can't expect everything to play nice.)

You pasted in an object containing text, not the text itself.
If you want to clear all formatting off the text, paste it first into a Plain Text TextEdit document first, then copy that over into Pages.

That's what I indicated I did to fix the issue. I didn't copy it from another application, I exported it. However, lesson still learned. It's too bad all text can't be treated the same in Pages. When I do the same set of operations in Word, there's no issue.
The difference between Pages v5 and the latest MS Word is PITA and PITA respectively. Both have interface design challenges, and Word has orders of magnitude better functionality, as should any product that benefits from 32 years of continuous development.
