Nope, you should just add an external SSD and boot via Thunderbolt from it. That would improve the performance substantially.
I am doing exactly what rkaufman87 has suggested with my late 2013 27" iMac.
I am using one of the Seagate Thunderbolt "sled" adapters with a 480 GB
Sandisk Ultra II 480GB SSD (had some really good pricing) which I had updated
from a Toshiba Qseries Pro 240 GB about a month ago. Both were/are performing
very well and is a significant difference vs. the internal HDD. The system is set up
with the SSD as boot and the internal HDD is a clone backup.
As long as you don't mind a bit of DIY, then yes you can add an internal SSD to your 2013 iMac. The process is not that hard, but you will need a few things.Check out the kits sold by OWC:
