Can you use a lav mic with an iPhone?

Hey guys,

I want to get my friend a cool holiday gift and he records his videos on his iPhone 6S and uses the built in mic. So I was looking for a lav mic on Amazon and was wondering, will the mic work like plug n play? What I mean is if he plugs them in and records a video from the native camera app, will the audio come from the lav mic. I want something easy so that he doesnt have to sync in post or anything like that.
