different footers for same document

I am trying to get different footers in the same document for a book. Contents and such would be roman numerals and the rest of the book would be numbered starting again at one. I have created different sections but the best I can get is for the numbering to start over but it will not let me use multiple types of numbering systems for the same document. The Apple Help page that corresponds with my question does not act like my version 5.6.1. I would be happy if I could get it to only number the main section of the book and have no footer on the beginning pages.
